Not much to report on for this day as it was a pure driving day.
We packed everything up, made a great breakfast, gave proper hugs to Adalto and Landon.
Ernie had left at 5 or something in the morning and was planning on driving straight through. He’s like that. It was similar to the last time we were here, only we were all on our KLRs and as we got close to Lee Vining, instead of camping, we decided to push on all the way home. That was a bad decision in hindsight. For Ernie this time, he had the comfort of the Jeep and did the roughly 850 miles in around 14 hours. I’ve done 1,000 in a day before but that was on my Hayabusa.
As for us, since we came in via the north this time, we headed out via the south.
This was a day to cover a lot of miles, so I took a bunch of crappy pictures through the windshield like this.
We did stopp at the Monuments but that was pretty much all. It’s that section of highway that’s famous from the movie Forrest Gump where he decides to stop running.
We took our pics, and then we saw a few horses being herded up in the distance by a guy on bareback. He was having an issue with a pony and so Tomm started just walking out to see if he could help. The guy was tripping and tackling the poor pony trying to do whatever it was he wanted and it was difficult to watch.
The dude said he didn’t need help or whatever and so Tomm came back. We had a quick bite to eat and then it was back to covering miles.
We pulled into Lake Powell after dark and the RV park office was closed. There was a sign on the door stating they’d be open at 8 in the morning or so. Somewhere in the night, we made the decision to sneak out of there before that – and we did. We didn’t unpack anything from the night before so it was just a matter of starting the engine and driving away. But hey, that’s for the next post!
